Nexus Assists Customer Achieve Business Goal Through Its Expertise in Data Center Technology
Company Background
Nexus recently assisted an organization specializing in environmental services, water/wastewater management, infrastructure services, security design, and outsourced technical services. This organization has approximately 10,000 employees located in 250 offices worldwide.
Initial Situation
The IT team had several projects defined around data center. They were rolling out a phased backup infrastructure for their 200+ remote offices, not located in one of the three main data centers they have today. They also needed to provide expansion for their ever growing Oracle environment, as well as provide data replication of critical data and applications in the event of a disaster. Other projects were regionally based, needing their own local storage as well.
Organizational Goal
Their goal was to incorporate a regionally based subsystem to serve as a repository for remote office backups. This would enable the organization to obtain a backup of all remote office data at one of the three main data centers. Future regional rollout at the other data centers would be phased. The organization wanted to standardize on one manufacturer platform that provided feature rich functionality, scalability, and redundancy. They also wanted to choose a manufacturer that had a world class support organization to support their ever growing infrastructure. There was also a need for an upgrade to an array sold last quarter, along with software to provide multi-pathing on servers, which would allow additional fault tolerance and load-balancing to several critical application servers. The final goal was to provide disaster recovery capabilities to some of their more mission critical applications.
Solution
The Nexus and EMC teams developed a solution that enabled the customer organization to achieve the goals mentioned above. With an eye to the future with expanding technologies and requirements, the Nexus and EMC teams designed a comprehensive solution that provided a scalable repository for the organization’s remote backup data; installed replication appliances between two of the main data centers, providing replication and disaster recovery capabilities; and lastly providing additional infrastructure to their database environment as additional storage capacities were needed. Nexus also worked closely with the existing Leasing Company to extend additional items to an existing lease, while providing a lower rate factor to extend.
The customer organization had long seen the value in a partner who could provide design and integration with data center technologies. The Nexus team continues to stress the importance of working with a partner that has the ability and resources to deliver next generation solutions, while at the same time taking full ownership of their IT projects nationwide.
Customer Benefits
The organization realized with the extensive knowledge that the Nexus team had of their data center environment that the “one partner, one manufacturer” strategy was the proper way to proceed to ensure success. This was further validated with the work the Nexus team had performed on their initial data center projects. Additional projects have already been identified and Nexus is well on its way to providing additional solutions, both around the core, and data center.
